Baby Box Review: The Best Gift For New Moms

Upon the birth of my little boy, Ben, I was delighted to be asked by eumom.ie to review the Ultimate Baby Box from thebabybox.com.

I was delighted to be in a position to review such a wonderful item, as I had read about the concept behind the baby box during my pregnancy and I was very intrigued by the idea.

For those reading who have never heard of it before, the idea of the Baby Box originated from the Finnish Maternity Package which was designed in 1938 to address the high infant mortality rate in Finland. This box contained a number of essential items for the first 9 months of the child’s life and was designed to reduce cot death.

But the best part was the box itself which was designed to be baby’s first crib! So basically once you received one of these packages you had everything you needed.

First Impressions

Once you open the Ultimate Baby Box, the first thing you will notice is the fact that it is chock-full of goodies. I mean quite literally full, right to the top! There are the necessary items like nappies, baby wipes, nappy sacks and nappy cream which are, of course, so useful, but it’s the Baby Box itself alongside the coordinating clothing, muslin swaddles, hooded towel, and a bathrobe that make this gift special.

Perfect For Newborns

The clothes are 0-3 month size and include 2 sleep suits, 3 vests, 2 hats, 2 bibs, 2 pairs of mittens as well as pants and cardigan combo that is just beyond adorable. Every single item is of the highest quality and oh-so-soft! My two-year-old has taken to bringing one of the muslin swaddles to bed with him as a comforter. Who could blame him? It’s just unbelievably soft! Everything has the same elephant emblem adorning it including the hooded towel, bathrobe and the box itself. Tying it all together there is the sweetest little soft toy elephant who my older boys have named Cuddles. Ben has taken to wanting Cuddles sitting beside his face as he puts himself to sleep. Self-soothing at 7 weeks – thank you Baby Box!!

Products You Will Love

So being your typical female the first thing I went for upon opening the box was the box of clothes. Once I had thoroughly examined every piece and dressed and undressed my poor unsuspecting baby umpteen times, I delved further and discovered a gorgeous Burt’s Bees Getting Started Kit as well as a Tommee Tippee baby care set. Having used neither set in the past, it was a great novelty to try each item.

The Burt’s Bees set includes a really handy 2-in-1 nappy cream that smells so good. It goes on like a cream but dries to a powdery finish and smells SO good. Did I mention it smells good? Simply put, the entire set is gorgeous and I am well and truly converted!

The Tommee Tippee baby care kit has several useful items including things like a hairbrush, nasal aspirator, and a baby nail clippers. Now, I have an issue with cutting babies nails ever since I nicked my eldest’s finger the first time I clipped his at a whopping 5 hours old (not my finest hour!) however this clippers has a little extension attached making it a lot easier for my clumsy hands to hold. The whole set comes in a handy carry case making it easy to use both at home and while out and about.

Sleeping Safe & Sound

As I mentioned above, the box is intended to be baby’s first bed and as such it comes equipped with its own mattress and fitted sheet. I thought that upon reaching the mattress that I had come to the end of the treasures held within however I was very pleasantly surprised to lift the mattress from the box to find a soft, portable changing mat! Something I had neglected to purchase this time around but has come in so handy since its discovery.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

It was with a great deal of sadness that I recently realised Ben had gotten too tall to comfortably sleep within the box and we’ve had to stop using it for its intended purpose, however, I’ve found a great way to continue using it for the future.

I’ve decided to use it as a Keepsake box for the three boys and, so far, it’s doing its job wonderfully. It would have been a shame for anything to happen to it as it’s a keepsake in itself, seeing as it was Ben’s first bed!

The Perfect Gift

All in all, I would recommend this gift set to anyone wanting to buy something extra special for a new mother in their life, or indeed as a treat for themselves.
Personally, I have loved it. It’s just a pity I didn’t have it on my other two! Guess it’s just another excuse to have another baby, right?
